How to choose a fence contractor in the Richmond area

Start with your property line

Build on your side of the line. Check your plat or hire a surveyor if you are unsure. A fence on a neighbor's land may have to come down.

Check HOA and permit rules first

The City of Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover each handle permits their own way, and many neighborhoods add HOA rules on height, material and color. Ask both before you sign.

Ask how posts are set

Clay soil holds water, so ask the depth, whether concrete is used, and how the base drains. Posts fail first.

Compare the product, not just the price

Same length can mean a very different fence. Compare material grade, post size, hardware, gates and the warranty.

Get it all in writing

A written estimate should list material, height, length, gates, removal of old fence, permits, and who calls for utility marking.
